Are you new to American education or the U.S. curriculum used in schools? Learning the different terminology, grade placements, and educational philosophy can be challenging in the beginning when moving between educational systems. In this blog, we will unpack all the key elements of American education, how this may differ from your child’s current or previous educational programs, what sets the American International School of Cape Town (AISCT) apart, and why our curriculum is uniquely equipped to nurture the next generation of global leaders.
Key Elements of an American Education
American education is renowned for its student-centered approach that prioritizes critical thinking, creativity, adaptability, and working with others in groups. Key elements include a well-rounded, comprehensive curriculum that incorporates subjects such as arts, physical education, and technology within the curriculum itself, not just as an extracurricular. Another component of American education strongly emphasizes developing problem-solving skills, encouraging innovative thinking, and fostering independent thought. American education also deeply values community involvement, extracurricular activities, and inclusivity and diversity, recognizing the importance of educating the whole child and preparing the students to engage with different perspectives and thrive in a globalized society.
How American Education at AISCT Differs from Other Systems
Grade Levels & Placements
In an American school, one traditionally has 13 grade levels, which begin at kindergarten when a child is five years old and turns six within the school year. Some other education systems call this preschool or nursery. Preschool programs within American schools are known as pre-kindergarten, Pre-K for short, Kindergarten 1, or early childhood programs. The AISCT early childhood program, our Grizzly Cubs and Kindergarten 1, starts at two years old; Kindergarten 2 is the first year of what we call elementary school. This is often referred to as primary school in other systems. For us at AISCT, it runs until Grade 5.
Students who complete Grade 5 move into our middle school, which includes grades 6 through 8. From Grade 9, they are in what is called high school. Middle school and high school are known as our Upper School, whereas early childhood and elementary school are grouped into our Lower School. The grade levels at AISCT directly align with the grade level system in the United States. This consistency allows us to align our curriculum and learning with the age-appropriate level.
Delivering learning at an age-appropriate level is key to a student’s success in learning, and equally, being placed in a similarly aged peer group is key for their social and emotional development. This is particularly important for our younger learners in our Lower School. For this reason, we have firm grade placement age guidelines. The start date of our school year may mean that sometimes students need to carry on longer in one are of a school year. These few months provide valuable transition time into the school community and new approaches to learning.
Academic Calendar
The school year in the United States (northern hemisphere) begins in August or September and ends in May or June of the following year. This varies from many other countries, where the school year begins in January and ends in December. The U.S. school calendar allows for long school holidays in June, July, and sometime August, which are summer months in the northern hemisphere.
Even if your child is currently in a January to December school year, one can easily transition mid-year into our program at AISCT. We have rolling admissions, accepting students throughout the year, with our two biggest intakes being in August and January. To bring a student into the correct grade level, there are times when a student may need to join their age-appropriate grade level and complete the grade from January to June, beginning in the next grade level with their cohort in August.
Holistic & Balanced Curriculum
American education stands out from the crowd for its emphasis on educating the whole child. The American curriculum aims to nurture not only academic excellence but also personal growth, creativity, and well-being. Unlike many educational systems that promote rote learning or early specialization, the American approach to education encourages a balanced development of skills across subjects. Subjects such as the arts, sports, physical education, and social responsibility and engagements are incorporated into the daily schedule and curriculum at the American International School of Cape Town. This focus on cultivating well-rounded individuals helps students develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills that are transferable beyond the classroom, preparing them for diverse challenges in a globalized world.
Critical Thinking & Global Citizenship
In the U.S., students are encouraged to question, analyze, and approach issues from multiple perspectives; as a result, creativity and innovation thrive. Like in America, the AISCT curriculum also prioritizes real-world applications while integrating technology, ensuring students are equipped with the digital literacy, communication, and critical thinking skills necessary to navigate the increasingly complex and globalized world we live in. Additionally, AISCT is passionate about developing global citizens and, as such, partners with a whole host of organizations to provide a robust service learning curriculum for our students. This focus on critical thinking, modern skills, and global citizenship ensures that AISCT’s students are prepared for both the workforce and the challenges of the future.
